Bringing in more color, defining the facial expressions, adding more movement in the background, more birds. Getting ready to bring in full color, lights and darks.

Here I have added more background and started to refine the features on the faces. The birds are being blocked here as well. My goal is to complete one painting a month for this series, that will give me 4 medium to large paintings to put up for this show, as well as some ink and water colors that I will being working on simultaneously....better get crackin.

I have begun a new series that I will be showing at Terra Bella Flowers and Mercantile in May 2010. This series will focus on the mother/child relationship as the Show is part of The Greenwood Annual Mothers Day Artwalk.

For fun, I thought I would do a step by step progress of one of the paintings I have started for this series.

Today was the first day of the Society for Children's book Writing and Illustrating (SCBWI) Conference here in Lovely Redmond Washington. It has been a very informative day. I have so much new information to process on how to move forward in the children's book market! Although I feel very humbled by the amazing talent I have seen today, I am also inspired to keep on keeping on and get to the next step. It's is so hard to silence that inner voice that wonders loudly what the heck I am doing here, but I am going to try to use that sensitive spot that she keeps poking into my side as a reminder to stay true to what it is I love to do, and that is to keep illustrating the stories and images that keep coming to mind! For me, the next step is to make a dummy book for one of the stories I have written. So that is what I am going to do, as well as start sending out my portfolio and postcards to publishing houses....Okay...one, two three...GO!

I tried to do an illustration of my kitty Juniper who has been missing since Friday May 1st. She has had a lot of Health problems that we were trying to deal with, but we think she took it upon herself to call it quits on her own. This is not exactly what she looks like, and it is amazing that after 11 years loving this kitty, I found it hard to remember exactly what her features were. Her most amazing features of all was her loving purr and her unique personality and her squeaky meow. all things un-draw-able.

I miss her terribly.

I know it's hard to say good-bye, but I wish I had the chance anyways.

I did this illustration with water soluble graphite and colored pencil.

This is a commissioned Pet Portrait of a cat named Malakai who died last year. I offered to the owner of the cat that I would do this portrait 1.) because I liked the cat, and 2.) to see if this type of work was something that I felt I could get into. It was a challange to come up with a picture that felt true to my painting style but also have it be an appropriate composition and mood for the person whose pet this was.

Overall I am happy with how this turned out, and it seemed like the pet owner was as well, and now feel like I would be willing to do more of these types of commissions.

This is a piece for a co-worker who had to have surgery for cancer. All of us at work decided to make her a piece of art. Jill loves Orcas and uses the Orca theme in a lot of her art work, so here is my offering. This is Stage one, and now I will be adding my color layers with acrylic.

Here is a sample of my latest favorite thing...gold leaf! I haven't tightened up the jpeg in photoshop, so it is not the best image, but it looks really neat in person!

I plan on doing a combination of graphite and gold leaf, as well as some graphite with acrylic and gold leaf elements....should be fun!

Progress on Little Red

Here are three "work in progress" panels from my version of Little Red Riding Hood. I realize now, after seeing them on the screen all together, that I need to bring more consistancy to the wolfs' facial features so that it looks like the same wolf. See if you can see the underlying theme that will run through this series....*hint* I changed the story a bit.

Once I complete the drawings, I will try out something a friend of mine has been doing, which is putting them in photoshop and colorizing them. I like them as graphite, but it will be interesting to see what the color will do?

This is drawing that is taking toooooo long to complete. Perhaps if I post it here the fairy of completion will send me a spark of motivation so it can leave the pages of the book and be framed like all its brothers and sisters!

I am fascinated with emotional development; how we are shaped and formed by the emotions that we experience in our lives. I have been working on a way to capture the intense feelings that are woven into the fabric of human interactions. This process connects me to my observations of the world and the experiences that shape my understanding of it. In my paintings and drawings I am able to present an unfolding story of emotion that guides me towards self awareness and clarity about who I am. In documenting these discoveries I hope to come closer to understanding the bonds that link us all together.
